Maybe it was wise of the current Pope to go giving his Sermon on the Mount to the Africans in an armored vehicle, even though the general atmosphere in Africa is perhaps closer to the line of thought (or the lack of it) he represents than it is anywhere else on the planet.  The people most in need of a sermon tend to be the least inclined to take any notice of the well-intended advice, so Papa Ratzinger  should have been on safe ground in this regard as well.
