TWO AIDS - DE - CAMP AND THE PRESIDENTIAL MARCH

5.9.2008

HVC Juho Kusti

President of Finland when the foundations for the nation's future relationships with Soviet Union were laid, after the Second World War.  He had the character to say no to Josif Stalin's attempts to make his country's military aid to Finland automatic in times of crisis.  Instead, as a result of the negotiations, the two countries' friendship and cooperation were allowed to develop but Finland maintained a say as to when military aid should be considered.  The name of this piece makes reference to what Paasikivi is said to have said about what was good about the job of the president in those days, in the middle of the tough negotiations.  I don't know if this is fact or fiction but it does characterize Paasikivi's caustic disposition
